The Dangers of Alcohol-Based Hand Sanitizers
There are many benefits of using a hand sanitizer. Hand sanitizer comes in liquid, foam, and gel forms, and they kill many viruses, bacteria, and microorganisms. In addition to hand washing, sanitizers can be handy in certain situations, such as public restrooms and work environments. Alcohol-based hand sanitizers

However, there is a risk of poor quality alcohol-based hand sanitizers containing toxic ingredients. The aim of the study was to determine the quality of alcohol-based hand sanitizers in South Africa. The researchers collected samples of hand sanitizers at various trade centres in Johannesburg and analyzed them using a gas chromatograph equipped with flame-ionisation detection.
Methanol-based hand sanitizers
During the coronavirus outbreak, the demand for hand sanitizers increased, and public health officials encourage frequent hand washing. CDC recommendations recommend using alcohol-based hand sanitizers. But which of the many types of hand sanitizers is safe? Regardless of the type, ethanol-based hand sanitizers contain 60% ethanol or more.
Methanol-based hand sanitizing products have been linked to a number of serious illnesses, including death. Recently, the FDA issued warnings about the methanol content in several brands of hand sanitizers. While the FDA has not yet ruled on whether or not methanol is safe, the food and drug administration has put a blacklist of hand sanitizers that contain it.
Expiration of hand sanitizers
Most hand sanitizers have an expiration date that is usually two to three years after the product was first manufactured. After that time, the hand sanitizer's effectiveness may begin to decline. While it is still safe to use, the efficacy of hand sanitizers is compromised. Fortunately, this doesn't mean they are useless. A hand sanitizer's expiration date will provide valuable information about when the product is still effective.
While alcohol-based hand sanitizers are effective at killing bacteria, their efficacy can degrade over time. Alcohol-based hand sanitizers are most effective when they contain 60 to 95 percent alcohol. Anything higher than that is considered overkill. Even hand sanitizers with less alcohol can still be effective but may not kill some of the bacteria. A hand sanitizer that has passed its expiration date still contains less than 70 percent alcohol and may not be as effective.
Side effects of methanol-based hand sanitizers
While the methanol in hand sanitizers can be beneficial to the environment, it can have detrimental side effects to the body. Methanol is an alcohol routinely used as a pesticide, solvent, and alternative fuel. It is also found in some aspartame-containing foods and is a potential carcinogen when absorbed through the skin. It is also highly flammable and is a serious hazard if it is accidentally released into the air or the water supply.
In response to the growing concern over the harmful effects of methanol-based hand ointments, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has taken action to help protect the public from these potentially harmful products. On July 8, 2020, the FDA updated its FAQs on the safety of hand sanitizers. Consumers are advised to follow label directions when applying hand sanitizers.
